Building Safer, Smarter Campuses With Intelligent Infrastructure
April 30, 2019 By BlueAlly
Campus security takes on many different forms. From the traditional school or university campus with the desire to provide safe learning environments for students, to the hospital facility that is focused on patient, family and staff safety, as well as federal and corporate office parks, each campus comes with unique needs when designing and facilitating smart and safe spaces for those on the premises.
In general, academic institutions are usually the first that come to mind when you think of the need for safe campus solutions. The University of Central Florida (UCF), for example, which is one of the largest universities in the country with more than 66,000 students and 12,000 employees, was experiencing difficulty with the task of managing 58 servers, 12,000 access points and hundreds of video surveillance cameras.
With a need to consolidate systems, centralize management and provide an avenue for reliable video data storage, Pivot3’s intelligent infrastructure allowed UCF to modernize and improve campus safety and streamline the management of their security systems. A new downtown Orlando campus has increased the camera count to more than 3,000, implementing Pivot3 infrastructure ensures UCF is able to scale the solution to meet its needs.
Solutions for safe campuses are comprehensive in that they not only provide protection, but also help deter incidents from happening. The Richardson Independent School District, located in Dallas County, Texas, deployed Pivot3 solutions for security and IoT for a cost-effective, mission-critical video surveillance solution to keep students safe. Since implementing the intelligent infrastructure, it has seen episodes of vandalism, such as graffiti and broken windows, go from a once-per-week incident to once a year.
In a healthcare setting, central to creating safe campuses is balancing improved security operations with the patient, family, visitor and staff experience. Video is a critical component in business operations, patient care and overall security and safety at Seattle Children’s Hospital. The hospital began to see failures in DVR components, causing all video to vanish, which meant it needed a more resilient solution. Pivot3 was able to help consolidate servers and storage and provide reliable video retention to help address patient concerns with care, investigate incidents of theft and provide security officials with ease of accessibility.
And let’s not forget the more non-traditional campuses. With the global rise in medical and non-medical cannabis products, industry leader Wayland Group required a solution to protect cannabis crops at all stages of the cycle. Adding to the challenge were governmental regulations necessitating that two years of video be readily available to access at any given time. This meant the ability to search through terabytes or petabytes of video footage was vital to compliance. With the support of Pivot3’s safe campus solution, 300 cameras were deployed with 5 petabytes of storage capacity, while also consolidating video management software and eliminating video data loss. Wayland Group now has a partner to help provide security, performance and resilience to support its unique business model.
Whether a campus is comprised of complex buildings and facilities, or acres of fields in the agricultural setting, there are solutions are available to help mitigate risk and to ensure people and assets are secure. Although each campus can present its own unique challenges, a strong foundation based on a security solution that is user-friendly, cost-effective and scalable can be the key for creating a customized safe campus environment.
